Dene Birchbark Boxes

See a size comparison with a soda can.

These birchbark boxes are handmade by the Slave Tribe in Fort Liard in the Northwest Territories. They are bound together with spruce roots on the lids and artificial sinew on the bottom, and are decorated with dyed porcupine quills on the lid only. They are tied with moose hide leather laces that may or may not be smoked. They are decorated with different designs.

The boxes may vary in size but they average about 2.5" high by 2.5" to 2.75" wide at the base, with a lid that measures between 2.75" to 3" wide. One box weighed about 20 grams.
